In the early 1980s, Philip Glass was mostly known for epic, uncompromising, and challenging works like Music in Twelve Parts and Einstein on the Beach. To gain a broader audience for his work, Glass wrote a suite of six chamber pieces that he titled Glassworks. He succeeded masterfully, perhaps too well; some twenty-five years after it was first released, Glassworks remains by far the composer’s best-selling recording.

You know, I never liked Glassworks very much. It put me off his music for ages. What won me back was The Photographer, and then Koyaanisqatsi (which I just nearly spelled correctly the first time - one of the A’s was in the wrong place). Then it all started to make sense.
Ironically, one of the tracks on Glassworks is an outtake from Koyaanisqatsi. Glassworks was released in 1981 and Koyaanisqatsi was relased in 1982 (IMDB says 1983, so there’s some debate on that point); given the scale of the project, Glass been working on the film score since the late 1970s (if not earlier).
Please - can someone tell me! The song “Islands” from the Philip Glass - Glassworks, was this ever used in a movie and if so which movie? The song is so haunting, and I listen to it over and over. It’s simplicity and rythum are so compelling. It’s so familiar. Please help!

Baby, when I met you there was peace unknown I set out to get you with a fine tooth comb I was soft inside, there was somethin’ going on You do something to me that I can’t explain Hold me closer and I feel no pain Every beat of my heart We got somethin’ goin’ on
Tender love is blind It requires a dedication All this love we feel Needs no conversation We ride it together, ah-ah Makin’ love with each other, ah-ah
Chorus:
Islands in the stream That is what we are No one in-between How can we be wrong Sail away with me to another world And we rely on each other, ah-ah From one lover to another, ah-ah
I can’t live without you if the love was gone Everything is nothin’ if you got no one And you did walk in tonight Slowly loosen’ sight of the real thing
But that won’t happen to us and we got no doubt Too deep in love and we got no way out And the message is clear This could be the year for the real thing
No more will you cry Baby, I will hurt you never We start and end as one, in love forever We can ride it together, ah-ah Makin’ love with each other, ah-ah
Repeat Chorus
